Overclockers are already pushing Ryzen to the edge

AMD’s latest CPU has been out for less than a week and already overclockers are having a ball with the processor.

While AMD did launch three different Ryzen 7 CPUs aimed at PC gamers,  overclockers seem to be focused on the Ryzen 7 1800X. This octa-core CPU with 16 threads has a base clock of 3.6GHz and can boost up to 4.0GHz.

At least that’s what it says on the box.

German overclocker “Der8auer” has pushed Team Red’s latest processor to 5.8GHz using liquid-nitrogen cooling according to rankings on HWBot.

The CPU was paired with 16GB of DDR4 memory running at 2400MHz and both were installed on an ASUS Crosshair VI Hero motherboard.

The only overclocker to come close to those speeds on HWBot is “Massman”, who managed to get Ryzen to hit 5.4GHz.

Of course while these speeds are impressive they are still quite a distance from the world record for CPU Frequency. The record is held by an overclocker from Finland known as “The Stilt” who overclocked an AMD FX 8370 to 8.7GHz back in 2014.

If you – like us – don’t have any liquid nitrogen laying about US overclocker SubLimation7 has managed to overclock the Ryzen 7 to 4.1GHz using air cooling.
