Devolver Digital shows off Ape Out, its newest game with a trailer you can actually play

Devolver Digital just showed off its newest game – Ape Out – in a YouTube trailer with a difference.

Viewable below, the “playable trailer” shows a minimalist game very reminiscent of Hotline Miami thanks to its colour palette and overhead perspective.

The difference here is that the player, as the title alludes to, is a rampaging gorilla.

What’s makes the trailer special is a link you can follow in the description. It takes you to a Steam page where you can download a demo to play the game.

What you play in the demo is exactly what you see in the trailer. You can blast through it in around the same amount of time as the trailer, and you’ll play through the scenarios in the same order.

At 93.9 megabytes we see no reason why you shouldn’t play Ape Out right now, even if you’re at work. Like Hotline Miami, a controller is recommend but you can also play with a mouse and keyboard.

Besides being fun to play, it’s a surreal experience being able to directly control a video you watched just moments before. Devolver Digital, we tip our hats to you – this is one of the best examples of guerrilla marketing we’ve ever seen. Ba dum tiss.

Ape Out will release in the northern hemisphere summer of this year, which translate to a June / July time frame for us down here in SA. We know it will be out on PC because of the demo, but other platforms are unconfirmed at this time.
