The Matrix is reportedly next in line for a reboot

Warner Bros. is reportedly in the early stages of rebooting the 1999 hit film, The Matrix.

Before you swallow the blue pill these plans are still in the very early stages of becoming a reality and could still be trashed before it becomes a reality.

Nevertheless, The Hollywood Reporter says that Zak Penn is currently in talks to write a treatment for the relaunch. Penn has lent his writing chops to a number of films including The Avengers, Last Action Hero and X-Men: Last Stand among others.

As to whether we’ll be seeing Keanu Reeves again, that ball still seems very much up in the air as according to the report, Michael B. Jordan may be the star of the show this time around.

This interests us because it opens up the relaunch to being more than just a carbon copy of the original film. Perhaps we’ll get to see a Morpheus origins story?

Another factor keeping the Reeves ball in the air is the matter of the Wachowskis. Earlier this year Reeves told Yahoo Movies that the Wachowskis would have to write and direct a Matrix movie for him to return to the franchise.

At time of writing it we know far to little about this supposed relaunch of the film to speculate about who may or may not be directing it should these rumours come to fruition.

The big question though is do we really want another Matrix movie?

Both sequels to the original film The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions performed poorly in comparison to the original and I think we all learned a lesson last year with Independance Day: Resurgence, that sometimes movies from the past should just be left alone.
