South African startup wins global Agripreneur of the Year award

The global Future Agro Challenge, which included 50 entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector (or agripreneurs, if you will) reached its conclusion this week, and a local firm has walked away with one of the highest accolades.

Reel Gardening founded by Claire Reid was named Agripreneur of the Year and will receive mentorship, partnership possibilities and, more importantly, the potential to expand the business into markets outside of South Africa.

The company makes biodegradable seed tape which is both easy to plant and maintain. The product was born in 2002 when Reid encountered problems growing her own vegetable garden. The agripreneur was 16 at the time.

In addition to the seeds, Reel Gardening has also released an app that can help gardeners plant and grow their gardens more effectively.

“We are excited that our championship was held for the first time in its third leg in South Africa and crowning a South African as the most innovative agripreneur,” Future Agro Challenge co-founder, Carla Tanas said in a statement.

If you happen to be an agripreneur with a big idea that can solve agriculture problems globally, and you missed out on this competition, don’t beat yourself up. Applications for the 2018 Future Agro Challenge open in April so keep an eye trained on the official website for more information.

Who knows, maybe next year we’ll be singing your praises.
