Alleged Apple hack may just be a case of recycled data

A hacking collective known as “Turkish Crime Family” has allegedly gained access to 627 million Apple and iCloud accounts.

An Apple spokesperson has now told Fortune that if the hackers do indeed have credentials that grant them access to user accounts, that information was not taken from Apple.

“There have not been any breaches in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud and Apple ID,” the spokesperson told Fortune. “The alleged list of email addresses and passwords appears to have been obtained from previously compromised third-party services.”

The hackers are demanding a ransom of $75 000 bitcoin or Ethereum or $100 000 in iTunes vouchers be paid to them by Apple.

Should Apple not comply with the attacker’s request the user accounts Turkish Crime Family purports to have access to will be wiped clean on 7th April.

The list of services that could have been recycled is endless. From Ashley Madison to Myspace, even Yahoo, it could be any of them and more. For that reason it’s recommended that you change any passwords you may have used on websites that have been compromised.

The spokesperson went on to say that the firm is actively monitoring its services to prevent unauthorised access to user accounts.
