President formally appoints Interim SABC Board

President Jacob Zuma has appointed an interim SABC board which will serve the public broadcaster for a six month period.

Following the portfolio committee on communications suggestions earlier this month, the interim board members will include chief executive officer at Business Unity SA Khanyisile Kweyama, who will function as chairperson.

The director of the South African National Editors Forum Mathatha Tsedu has also been appointed as deputy chairperson of the board.

Joining the chairs are John Matisson, Febbe Potgieter-Gqubule as well as former SABC board member Krish Naidoo.

“Millions of South Africans rely on the public broadcaster for news, information and entertainment. We wish Ms Kweyama and her team well as they begin the important task of leading and revitalizing one of the most important national resources, the SABC,” said the president in a statement.

The decision to appoint an interim board follows an investigation by parliament into the previous board’s fitness to hold office.

The findings were tabled before the National Assembly in February in a report which has since been adopted by the portfolio committee.
