The registration process for .africa domain names is set to begin next month but before you start thinking up clever URLs there are a few things you should know.

The first is that .africa domains won’t be readily available from 4th April to 2nd June. This Sunrise Period as it’s known will allow trademark owners to secure domains that match their trademarks. For instance MTN would be able to secure mtn.africa before anybody else could.

These trademarks will need to be validated by a Trade Mark Clearing House but in the instance of the .africa a system called Mark Validation System will also be used to validate trade marks which are not yet registered, company names, trust names and common law trade marks.

Once the Sunrise Period is complete there will be a Landrush Period in four phases.

  • Phase 1 – 5th – 9th June
  • Phase 2 – 12th – 16th June
  • Phase 3 – 19th -23rd June
  • Phase 4 – 26th – 30th June

During these times registration of .africa domains will be open to everybody but registrations will garner a higher price.

Finally, on 4th July .africa registrations will be open to the public at large and domains will be assigned on a first come first served, basis.

So mark your diaries and start thinking of clever .africa URLs, we’re sure you have an idea of what we want ours to be…
