How to stop your Switch’s Joy-Con controllers from disconnecting

Nintendo’s Switch console hit shelves last week and while many are loving the platform there have been a couple of issues reported.

One of the more frustrating problems with the console is that the Joy-Con controllers – particularly the left controller – will disconnect from the console.

The problem is one Nintendo has acknowledged and apparently it has to do with interference.

That’s right, in 2017 your smartphone may be interfering with your ability to milk virtual cows.

The problem could of course be linked to out-of-date software and low charge on the controllers but if you’ve troubleshot both of those it seems your console might have some sort of interference causing issues with it.

To solve this Nintendo advises the Switch should not be placed behind your TV, near an aquarium, in or under a metal object, against a nest of wires, within 1.2m of another wireless device.

If the problems persist the interference could be coming from any of the following objects:

  • Laptops, tablets, etc.
  • Wireless headsets
  • Wireless printers
  • Microwaves
  • Wireless speakers
  • Cordless phones
  • USB 3.0-compatible devices such as hard drives, thumb drives, LAN adapters, etc

Nintendo advises that these devices should be switched off or moved at least 1.2m away from the console.

Let’s hope that Nintendo finds a solution that’s better than “move your smartphone away from the console”.
