Google is currently trying to fend off a lawsuit from the US Department of Labour (DoL) for allegedly maintaining the gender pay gap by paying its female employees across its company less than males.

According to The Guardian, the DoL said it has evidence of “systemic compensation disparities” at Google, a company which prides itself in encouraging gender diversity among its entire US workforce.

“The government’s analysis at this point indicates that discrimination against women in Google is quite extreme, even in this industry,” Janet Herold, regional solicitor for the DoL told the British news site.

Google’s 2014 diversity report revealed that women made up 40% of its US workforce and 30% of its global workforce.

The company has denied that it has a gender pay gap issue, also refuting claims by the DoL that it refused to hand over salary data and documents as it’s required by law to do so.

The DoL has requested the documents to understand why the pay disparity exists at the company.

“We vehemently disagree with [Wipper’s] claim. Every year, we do a comprehensive and robust analysis of pay across genders and we have found no gender pay gap. Other than making an unfounded statement which we heard for the first time in court, the DoL hasn’t provided any data, or shared its methodology,” Google told The Guardian.
