Uber banned in Italy

This is turning out to be a pretty rough year for Uber.

Over the past four months the company behind the world’s most used ride-sharing app has seen itself targeted by protestors (both locally and abroad), at the centre of a sexual harassment case and it’s CEO was filmed verbally abusing a driver.

Now it’s been banned in Italy.

According to a report on Reuters, an Italian court has ruled that the ride-sharing app constitutes unfair competition.

Finding in favour of a suit filed by the country’s major metered-taxi associations, the court ruling states that Uber can no longer operate or advertise its services in Italy. Ouch!

Uber’s Italian branch said that it was “shocked” by the decision and that would be appealing it.

“Thousands of professional, licensed drivers use the Uber app to make money and provide reliable transportation at the push of a button for Italians,” Uber Italy said in a statement.

This isn’t the first time Uber has found its ability to operate in a country blocked. The ride-sharing app has effectively been banned in Germany, Thailand, Holland and Belgium. It’s also been a magnet for protests in some regions – including South Africa – by traditional taxi drivers who feel Uber is unfairly pushing them out of the market and cutting off their livelihoods
