This Pikachu lamp has the Pokémon magically turn on a light bulb

Maker YouTube channel Ladbrotory has created a “Magic Night Light” based on the Pokémon Pikachu that can activate a light bulb wirelessly.

This isn’t the popular carnival trick or simply one of backup bulbs with a battery inside of it, just plain old science.

As explained by the always funny ElectroBOOM, placing a fluorescent bulb near a Tesla coil will cause it to light up. Inside of the 3D printed Pikachu, there is one of those coils, but it looks like the little guy is doing the work himself.

As this is a maker project, we’d be remiss not to tell you how to make it yourself.

First you’ll need one of those Tesla coils. The one used in the project is a 5V USB toy. The exact model can be found on eBay for AU $9.63 (~R100).

Next you’ll need a Pikachu. Ladbrotory has made their files free to download off of Thingiverse. It already comes with holes for the coil so all you need to do is print and paint it.

You’ll be using a lot of filament, so keep that in mind. We’re sure another version of the project could be done with a plastic toy of Pikachu or any other Pokémon. Just make sure it’s electric type.

Finally, watch the video below to see how it’s all put together.
