Kaby Lake and Ryzen owners can now (unofficially) install updates for Windows 7

Back in March Microsoft announced that owners of Intel’s Kaby Lake and AMD’s Ryzen processors would no longer receive updates for Windows 7 or 8.1.

The only way for owners of the latest generation of processors to get around this was to either downgrade their CPU or upgrade their operating system to Windows 10. Neither of those options are what you would call ideal.

But now a reverse engineer known to us only as Zeffy has released a patch that circumvents Microsoft’s update blockade.

By downloading and examining Windows updates KB4012218 and KB4012219, Zeffy was able to find the code within a DLL file that prevents updates from being delivered to systems running the aforementioned CPUs.

The reverse engineer gives detailed instructions about how to patch the file over on GitHub. The patch essentially tricks the operating system into thinking your PC is using a supported CPU even if it isn’t.

With this being an unofficial “patch” there are some problems. The first is that should the DLL file that was patched ever get updated you would need to patch it again.

The second problem is that this backdoor could be removed in future updates and you’d then have to go out and upgrade your operating system.

This is a rather convenient stay of execution for Ryzen and Kaby Lake owners that use older operating systems. It might not be permanent but it’s a solution for now.
