You can now play StarCraft: Brood War for free, here’s how

At the tail end of March Blizzard said that it would make the original StarCraft and the expansion StarCraft: Brood War free to play, and now you can.

Released in 1998, StarCraft is a sci-fi strategy game that sold 1.5 million copies in its first year of release. Aside from being the most fun you could have in 1998 without discussing the millennium bug, StarCraft also led to the rise of esports in South Korea.

The game is currently being remastered for release later this year and will include support for UHD resolutions, improved textures and localisation for eight additional languages.

Sadly the free version available today doesn’t sport those improvements but it will feature the first patch for StarCraft in eight years.

The patch adds support for windowed and fullscreen windowed mode, an Observer mode, improved anticheat mechanisms and improved gameplay responsiveness.

While StarCraft is old it is an excellent game and the best bit is that the only thing you lose by downloading the game is data. The file that prompts the launcher is just over 8MB in size and the game itself requires about 1.6GB of disk space.

StarCraft: Brood War is available for both PC and Mac and you can find the respective download files over on the official website.
