Wits students protest over WiFi and poor accommodation services

A group of about 100 Wits University students have staged a protest at the West Campus over issues with services at a newly opened residence.

Students staying at the Yale Village Res, which was opened this year and belongs to the university, began demonstrating earlier this morning, burning a Pikitup bin and holding placards.

Among their complaints is the lack of WiFi access, study areas, cleaning services, a computer lab and student bus services. According to students, the cost for accommodation at the res is over R52 000.

The protest is peaceful, university management said, however Campus Control is managing the situation on the ground and the police are on standby.

The Dean of Students arrived on the scene to receive the memorandum and to engage with the affected students, but students have said they want to see Vice Chancellor, Adam Habib.

This is the first protest to hit Wits since last year’s massive #FeesMustFall campaign. Wits has said the protest has not affected academic programme and classes continue as usual.
