The Kitty Hawk Flyer is not the flying car you’ve been dreaming about

For anybody who’s had aspirations of living a Jetsons lifestyle complete with flying car, that dream might soon reach fruition… sort of.

A startup by the name of Kitty Hawk has released a video that shows off the Flyer, a flying car that looks like a more refined version of Colin Furze’s hoverbike.

Truth be told it’s hardly a car and more of an airborne jet-ski which is good because the Flyer isn’t exactly meant to be your ride into the office everyday.

The vehicle is only meant to be operated over fresh water in uncongested areas, Kitty Hawk says on its website. That missive has more merit once you learn that because the Flyer falls into the FAR 103 Ultralight Category of US Federal Aviation Authority regulations, in that it doesn’t require a pilot’s license to operate.

You can check out the Flyer in action in the video below, just try not to pay attention to the acting.

So the Flyer is hardly a “flying car”, but heck it’s cool.

There is no word yet on how much the Flyer will cost but if you sign up for a three year membership that costs $100 you will get a $2 000 discount off the retail price when the vehicle launches at the end of this year.

If this sounds like something you would like to spend your money on for a great weekend at Hartebeespoort Dam we have some bad news for you, the Flyer isn’t technically available here.

“We do not intend to restrict the location from which you place an order for the Flyer except for embargoed countries, however we do not have current plans to ship the vehicle abroad,” Kitty Hawk says on its website.

The firm goes on to say that if buyers wish to ship a Flyer to their country they should research the regulations in their country, take delivery of the vehicle in the US and then ship it home.

Of course Kitty Hawk isn’t the only firm with flying car aspirations. Airbus hopes to test its own flying car by the end of this year and Chinese firm Ehang showed off its take on a flying car  in 2016 which looks more like a one man drone.

The question now is, when can we get those cool vending machines in The Jetsons that make breakfast appear on the table at the press of a button?
