This Rasbperry Pi camera captures images stretched by time itself

Maker Jon Bumstead claims to have created a camera based off of the Raspberry Pi that captures images and videos using time as one of its dimensions.

Inspired by artists Hiroshi Kondo and Adam Magyar, the resulting works incorporate parts of long exposure photography, light writing and slit-scan photography.

How this works is explained in the .gif below, where a standard picture of the Eiffel Tower is altered by the effects of time.

The physical unit Bumstead made uses a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B with an 8 megapixel camera housed in a 3D printed case. Make sure you watch this video showing the camera off to see how the physical project captures its unique imagery.

You can make your own space-time camera by following this Instructables guide. You’ll need a long list of materials and tools, but there is a neat list of everything with links to buy the items online. The code that makes everything work is also included.

There is, however, an alternative to making a dedicated camera to capture these kinds of videos and images. Thankfully Bumstead has provided the code to post-process video after it has been captured. It uses the programme MATLAB and the custom code and instructions on how to use it are also available at the bottom of that Instructables page.
