Telkom creates a bespoke company to grow esports in SA

It’s no secret that we here at htxt.africa love esports so you can imagine our delight when Telkom invited us to an event to discuss some big changes within the DGL.

In fact calling it the DGL anymore is a misnomer as the telco has split the firm off from the main body and created VS Gaming a stand-alone subsidiary of the Telkom Group.

The company will be headed by newly appointed chief executive officer Cambridge Mokanyane who is as excited about the new venture as we are.

This is an incredible development for the esports environment,” the CEO says. “Never before have we had this kind of partnership for local tournaments. This will ensure much needed exposure for our teams and will place us firmly on the global map of esports.”

Mokonyane goes on to say that the true purpose of the new firm is to grow esports in South Africa. That goes for both gamers and those that want to work behind the scenes.

To that end VS Gaming has signed exclusive partnership with SuperSport to broadcast the upcoming Dota 2 and CS:GO tournaments.

There will be more news on the newly formed company in the coming weeks including how exactly it will be contributing to the growing esports scene in South Africa.

We have to admit this is an incredibly bold move from Telkom. Of course we love esports but for the firm to recognise the growing popularity of the scene and to invest so heavily in the scene.
