An unknown teen broke Ellen Degeneres’ most retweeted tweet record, thanks to chicken nuggets

Popular US TV talk show host, Ellen Degeneres, held the record for most retweeted tweet in history from December 2014 after snatching it from Barack Obama. But, that title now officially belongs to an ordinary teen boy whose love for chicken nuggets helped secure him secure it.

Last month, 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson from Reno, Nevada, tweeted a US fast food chain called Wendy’s asking how many retweets it would take for them to supply him with free nuggets for a full year.

Now, for those of you who don’t use Twitter much, this is a new growing trend where tweeps (users) ask brands or people how many retweets of their request it would take for them to be given anything from free sneakers to a date. It hasn’t worked for some, but it’s obviously exploded for Wilkerson.

Wendy’s responded and set the bar extremely high at 18 million, a challenge Wilkerson gladly accepted.

The Wendy’s challenge grew so big, Wilkerson now even has a website dedicated to it and is selling t-shirts with #NuggsForCarter on them, with proceeds from the sales going to charity.

Wilkerson has been interviewed on TV shows around the US and just after surpassing Degeneres’ 3.4 million record, Wendy’s generously donated $100 000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Wilkerson will probably never get to 18 million, nonetheless, Wendy’s has said it will still give him his nuggets anyway.

He has not been on the Ellen Show yet, but knowing Degeneres’ love for internet sensations and the fact that this time around, she’s directly involved, we expect he’ll appear on it very soon.

From an ordinary, hungry teen, to a viral internet star – how’s that for unexpected fame?
