Travelers from Europe to the USA may soon face a tech ban on flights

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the United States is considering a tech ban on flights coming from European airports.

The ban would be similar to the one the US and the UK implemented back in March where travellers from eight Middle Eastern and African countries were banned from carrying laptops, tablets and other electronics larger than a smartphone onto a flight.

To be clear, these electronics are not completely banned from the flight, they just need to be checked into your luggage.

While the DHS is only considering implementing a similar ban for travellers from European countries at this stage it could be a terrible move considering the number of travelers moving between the two regions for business.

No formal decision has been made by the DHS according to the AFP (via Daily Maverick) and this serves only as a warning that the ban is being discussed.

It’s unclear at this stage why a ban on large electronics would be implemented. The ban in March was brought about following threats of terrorist activity in the US while the UK said it wanted to make sure travelers were safe.

While the ban wouldn’t directly affect South Africans here at home, business people travelling to the US via Europe may find themselves twiddling their thumbs on a flight rather than using the time to get some work done.

That said, you could just use your smartphone but who wants to edit an Annual Report on a 5inch display? Not us, that’s for sure.
