For the longest time Intel has enjoyed pole position in the enthusiast PC market but AMD might wrest its crown from it.

Our justification for this assessment is the announcement of AMD’s latest Ryzen CPU bearing the name Threadripper.

Details about the CPU are still thin on the ground but AMD did see it apt to tease that Threadripper will sport 16 cores and 32 threads. We also know thanks to a report by WCCFTech that Threadripper will be able to control four DDR4 channels and sports a 32MB L3 cache.

Beyond that however we know very little about this CPU other than its AMD’s answer to Intel’s well established suite of enthusiast grade processors.

With that having been said there is a rather popular rumour running around that Intel will be showing off a new Core-i9 processor at Computex later this month.

AMD has chosen the same event to reveal more details about its CPU according to PC World so we don’t have long to wait to see just what this chip is capable of.

So what is the point of having 16-cores and 32 threads? Well we’re just as stumped as you given that Intel’s Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition which sports 10 cores was pretty powerful already. Our best guess is that Threadripper will be super powerful because it needs to be.

As we’ve mentioned many times before AMD went from being a competitor in the high-end CPU market to a firm that tired its best bless them. Since the release of Ryzen earlier this year however, AMD has shown that it’s not only capable of creating a great CPU but that it can do it cheaply as well.

Threadripper might be the flagship CPU AMD needs to cement itself as choice for those enthusiasts building PCs for 8K gaming and content creation.

So now we wait until Computex which kicks off on 30th May to find out more. One thing is for certain though the CPU wars are on and hopefully it’ll be the consumer who wins.
