Joburg Smart City, green tech & transport on the cards for Mashaba’s first SOCA

Discussion of City of Joburg’s initiatives, including Smart City, green technology and economy and transport, will be on the cards during Mayor Herman Mashaba’s first State of the City Address tomorrow.

Mashaba, who became the city’s mayor nine months ago, will deliver his inaugural speech at the newly built R280-million state-of-the-art council chamber in Braamfontein tomorrow morning (3 May) at 10am.

“Mayor Mashaba’s speech is in the main expected to centre on his administration’s Nine Key Priorities, chief among which is the promotion of economic development and attraction of investment to achieve 5% growth and 6% unemployment reduction by 2021,” the city said.

The Mayor, who always maintains that “a Johannesburg that works is a South Africa that works”, is expected to spell out how these targets will be reached during the current five-year municipal term. He is also expected to highlight the changes and achievements that have been made in areas such as public safety, housing, financial sustainability, environment, fight against corruption and business and economic development since the new administration took over the reins nine months ago.

The Smart City initiative encompasses the city’s free WiFi project, while transport initiatives include Rea Vaya, roads, Gautrain, and Metro Bus projects. Mashaba could also provide an update on the scrapping of the bicycle lane project.

MMC for Finance, Rabelani Dagada, will follow the SOCA up with the city’s 2017/18 budget speech in two weeks time.
