Overwatch Game of the Year Edition and Anniversary Event Announced

Blizzard’s highly successful team based shooter, Overwatch, is getting a Game of the Year edition to celebrate its first release anniversary.

Don’t get too excited though because the contents of the Game of the Year edition are rather lacklustre to say the least.

The Overwatch: Game of the Year edition releases next week Tuesday, 23 May 2017 and includes the following bonus items:

  • 10 Loot Boxes with random items such as credits, skins, emotes, poses voice lines, sprays and highlight intros.
  • Mercy’s wings for Diablo 3 players
  • Tracer for Heroes of the Storm
  • Hero Skins: Vintage skins for Blackwatch Reyes, Strike-Commander Morrison, Overgrown Bastion, Security Chief Phara, and Slipstream Tracer.
  • StarCraft 2 in-game Portraits of Bastion, Tracer, Pharah, Reaper, Soldier: 76, and Winston.
  • Overwatch-themed Hearthstone Card Back
  • Baby Winston pet to use in World of Warcraft
  • Overwatch-themed card back for Hearthstone

The GotY edition will be replacing the Origins Edition and basically just contains 10 extra loot boxes in addition to what you would normally get with the Origins Edition. No pricing has been confirmed yet.

Blizzard’s official Overwatch Youtube channel also uploaded a video thanking players for supporting the game while highlighting some key Overwatch events over the past year. You can check it out below:

It’s been an A-MEI-ZING year, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

As for the Anniversary Event itself, Overwatch will be free to download and play from May 26-29 2017 on all platforms and any progress made will carry over should you decide to purchase the full game on the same Blizzard, Sony Entertainment, or Xbox Live account that you used.

If you somehow avoided the hype machine and haven’t had a chance to play Overwatch since its release, now’s your chance to give it a go (just be sure to have Xbox Live Gold or Playstation Plus enabled on your account if you decide to play on a console).
