Richard Hammond bins supercar while filming The Grand Tour

Former Top Gear and current The Grand Tour host Richard Hammond has landed himself in hospital after crashing a supercar while filming in Switzerland.

The Grand Tour host escaped the accident with a fractured knee which is impressive considering the car he pranged.

The vehicle is a concept car from Croatian Rimac Automobili called the Rimac Concept One. It’s an electric super car that is capable of reaching 305kmph and go from 0 to 100kmph in 2.6 seconds.

Hammond crashed the vehicle shortly after completing a run of the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland.

A spokesperson for The Grand Tour was quoted by Wheels24 as saying, “Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames. He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over revealing a fracture to his knee.”

Since his accident Hammond has appeared on YouTube in a video posted to the channel The Grand Tour Fans in which he thanks paramedics and medical staff while also apologising to his wife and children for being “such a collossal…” at which point fellow host James May holds up a copy of Dean Burnett’s book The Idiot Brain.

You can tell it’s May from the floral shirt alone.

The second season of The Grand Tour is expected to kick off later this year, providing of course that there are no more prangs while filming.

For those that missed Season 1 you can watch it right now on Amazon Prime Video.
