High demand but little space: Top 10 schools which received the most online applications in Gauteng

If you’re the parent or guardian of a grade eight child who will be starting their high school career at Benoni High, consider yourself very lucky.

The school and 10 others have been named as the most in demand schools after having received exponentially more online applications for grade one and eight in 2018 through the Gauteng Department of Education’s Admissions site.

Early bird admissions close tonight at midnight and those who are late, will most likely end up having to send their child to a school that is not their first, second or even third choice.

The largest number of applications were made in the Johannesburg Region, with 102 419 application. The second largest number of applications came from Ekurhuleni (79 779), Tshwane received the third largest number of applications (77 597) and Sedibeng reflects the smallest number of applications at 43 112.

Boksburg High School and Hoërskool Akasia are the two most popular schools in the province, having received 1 525 applications each.

Ten of the 11 top high-pressure schools are high schools. Laerskool Akasia, with 1 308 applications, is the only primary school on the list.

The full list is as follows:

Ekurhuleni:

  • Boksburg High School (1 525)
  • Alberton High School (1 437)
  • Benoni High School (1 269)

Johannesburg:

  • Mondeor High School (1 461)
  • Sir John Adamson High School (1 385)
  • Hoërskool President (1 322)
  • Northcliff High School (1 277)

Tshwane:

  • Laerskool Akasia (1 308)
  • Hoërskool Akasia (1 525)
  • Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz (1 244)
  • Pretoria High School For Girls (1 461)

Sunward Park High School remains the most preferred ICT school, reflecting the highest number of applications at 1050, followed by Dalpark High School with 753 and Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School with 671 applications.

Over 400 schools received as little as 50 applications since 2nd May.

To help divert the overflow from these schools, the department said it will transfer some to schools with low applications, arrange for scholar transportation for those who cannot find placement close to their homes and finish building new schools in the high pressure areas.

In total, 269 676 applications have been received to date. There are 342 610 spaces available in total across public Gauteng schools.

“We call on parents who have not yet applied to do everything necessary to submit their applications before the midnight deadline. Between now and the placement period, schools will submit their lists to districts for verification and approval. The placement period commences on 24th July 2017. Once parents receive an offer of placement, they are advised to accept or reject the offer. If parents do not respond, the offer will be given to other parents on the queue,” the department said.

“Once more, we thank the people of Gauteng for the overwhelming response to the online admissions. The early processing of admissions means that learning and teaching can commence on the first day of the 2018 academic calendar,” said MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi.
