Eskom board chairman Ben Ngubane resigns

Public enterprise minister Lynne Brown announced late last night that she had accepted the resignation of Eskom board chairman Ben Ngubane.

Brown made the announcement late on Monday night adding that Zethembe Khoza would take over as acting chairman until new appointments could be presented to cabinet for approval.

The chairman resigned with immediate effect.

“I would like to thank Dr Ngubane for his contribution to turning Eskom around since the load shedding days of 2014/15, and wish him well in the future.” Brown wrote in a statement.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Ngubane had ties to the controversial Gupta family.

According to leaked emails, associates and business partners linked to the Guptas drafted the first speech Ngubane made announcing the departure of Zola Tsotsi.

The chairman’s departure also comes after Ngoako Ramatlhodi accused Ngubane and former chief executive officer Brian Molefe of trying to pressure him into blackmailing Glencore.

It is unclear at time of writing exactly why Ngubane has resigned.
