Neill Blomkamp’s first short film breaks cover and you can recreate it if you like

Oats Studio – Neill Blomkamp’s project that is focused on creating short, experimental films – has released its first short film and it is spectacular.

The film is called Rakka and tells the story of an alien race that has arrived on Earth, enslaved humanity and destroyed what we have created. The short film is directed by Blomkamp and stars Sigourney Weaver.

We don’t want to spoil too much so we’ve embedded the film for you to watch below.

The movie is also available for free on Steam but that isn’t all you’ll find if you type “Rakka” into Valve’s storefront.

The team at Oats Studio have made all the assets used in this first film available for R55. That includes 3D assets, the scripts, the concept art and downloadable video files that features a 5.1 surround sound mix.

“Our wish is to receive funding sourced directly from our audience, as we establish a studio fueled by pure creativity and passion. We have many, many more worlds to create and stories to tell, but we need help from people around the globe. Our goal is to create Volumes 2, 3 and more and eventually, full scale-scale features. If you feel positive about what you’ve seen and want more, please support us by purchasing our additional content as it becomes available,” reads a statement on the Oats Studio store page.

In addition to getting funding for its other projects, Oats Studio hopes to inspire young filmmakers by making these assets available.

The studio has said that it is currently in the process of packaging more content to send to supporters including dailies from Rakka (we assume this is daily updates) the sound track and sound stems.

Truth be told it’s a rather clever way to entice backers and if Rakka is anything to go by we’d like to think R55 is a sound investment in the future of this studio.
