Metered taxi drivers expected to march to Gautrain offices today

Metered taxi drivers are expected to march to the Gautrain offices in Midrand today in protest of Uber.

However, despite the plans according to a report by EWN, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has said that the drivers’ application to march had been denied as it did not meet the seven-day notice period of an intention to march.

The metered drivers are protesting Uber and its lower prices which are supposedly pricing the drivers out of the market.

The authorities have heard from sources that the drivers intend to go ahead with the march. JMPD’s Edna Mamonyane told EWN that according to sources the R21 and R24 (the major routes leading to OR Tambo International Airport) may be blocked by protesting drivers.

Tensions between metered taxi driver and Uber drivers surfaced once again yesterday when an Uber vehicle was attacked in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

We will continue to keep an eye on the situation and provide updates to the situation should the march happen.
