“Project Mayhem” is fighting call scams with endless robot phone calls

YouTube channel Project Mayhem was recently confronted by a call scam involving criminals pretending to be the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Instead of simply putting the phone down and adding them to a block list, the person behind the channel decided to spam them right back.

They set up a script to automatically call the scammer’s number 28 times every single second. A robot voice would then answer stating: “hello, it has been detected that you are a scammer. Because of this we are now flooding your phone lines to prevent you from scamming additional people. This will not stop until you stop.”

The videos below have some vulgar  language so keep that in mind if you’re at work.

That first video was posted on 23rd June and the channel has continued to flood the scammers with calls in new and interesting ways.

The latest video, posted yesterday, uses messages from the channel’s supporters as the automated speech that would greet the spammers when they pick up the phone.

You can watch it below and look out for our favourite line: “Scammers, I have come to bargain” in reference to this scene from Doctor Strange (spoilers if you haven’t seen it yet).
