Walking talking K9 from Doctor Who recreated with Raspberry Pi

Maker James West has created his own version of a K9 robot from Doctor Who as a toy for his child.

This build features a body made out of grey acrylic which is filled with a Raspberry Pi Zero W, a speaker, and the motor system from an educational robotics kit.

The head, which is made out of foam board with a transparent red acrylic visor, lights up thanks to an LED. K9 can also “speak”, repeating lines from the show activated remotly by pressing the A button an a Wii Mote or the arcade button on its back.

That Wii Mote also acts as the controller with movement mapped to its directional buttons.

This build’s movement is powered by four AA batteries with the Raspberry Pi connected to a power bank that can be recharged by an extension mounted on the back.

We highly suggest that you read West’s build log on his site which comes with a shopping list for the components. There’s also links directly to sites where you can buy those parts, which is ideal if you want to replicate this project.

As West states in that log this isn’t mean to be a replica from Doctor Who, but rather a toy that can be moved around “without worrying about bumps and scrapes”.  This explains the more simplified design of the body. We’re sure that if someone wanted to make something more show accurate they could use this build as a base.
