Camera maker RED reveals a smartphone with a holographic display

The manufacturer of high-end cameras RED has announced it will be releasing a media machine or as we like to call it, a smartphone in 2018.

Given the name Hydrogen One, the smartphone will run on Android and sports a 5.7inch “hydrogen holographic display”.

According to the firm the display uses nanotechnology to seamlessly switch between displaying regular 2D content, holographic RED Hydrogen 4-View content (H4V) and stereo 3D content.

RED also says that users will be able to view virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality content without glasses.

Modular, obviously

Building on the tradition of being able to add features to a RED camera, the Hydrogen One will allow users to expand the handset with an “ever-expanding modular component system” thanks to a new high speed data bus.

Right now all RED has revealed regarding mods is an unnamed attachment that will allow users to shoot higher quality video and still images.

Whats more is that users will be able to use the smartphone as an interface and monitor for the RED Scarlet, EPIC and Weapon cameras.

The Hydrogen One will house a USB Type C port and a microSD card, that’s all we know about the raw specs of the handset right now.

Now for the price.

As is customary with RED products, the Hydrogen doesn’t come cheap. An aluminium version will retail for $1 195 and a titanium version for $1 595 though these prices are subject to change.

The RED Hydrogen One is expected to go on sale early next year and you can order your own right now if you’d like.
