Qualcomm has asked that sales of the iPhone be banned in the US

The ongoing legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm has reached a new, messy milestone.

Qualcomm has filed a request with the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) that asks to not only stop iPhones from coming into the country, but also that sales of handsets already in the country be halted.

For those that aren’t aware, Qualcomm is suing Apple for using patented technology in its iPhone, patents which Qualcomm says enable high performance while extending battery life.

This comes after Apple launched a lawsuit in January against Qualcomm claiming the chipmaker was charging for patents it had nothing to do with.

In April Qualcomm counter sued.

“The patents we are asserting represent six important technologies, out of a portfolio of thousands, and each is vital to iPhone functions. Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s technology while refusing to pay for it. These lawsuits seek to stop Apple’s infringement of six of our patented technologies,” Qualcomm’s executive vice president Don Rosenberg said in a statement.

The firm has said it expects the USITC will commence its investigation into the claims in August and the case will be tried next year.
