DA: Brown must halt Eskom bonus pay-outs

The DA has expressed concern over news of Eskom offering extravagant bonuses to executive in the midst of the looming threat of its  coffers emptying very soon and has appealed to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown, to halt the payouts.

Eskom recently requested to pay former and current execs over R13 million in total in short-term bonuses. These execs include Brian Molefe, Matshela Koko and Anoj Singh, who have all been implicated one way or another in controversial dealings and links with the Gupta family.

Eskom proposed the following a bonuses of R2.1 million for Molefe, R1.5 million for Koko and R1.9 million for Singh.

The problem is, while Eskom wants to pay this huge amount to execs, it may not even be able to pay basic employee salaries by November, according to Sunday Times.

According to the report, the parastatal’s income decreased from R5.3 billion last year to R900 million in June, while the interest it accrued on its debt jumped to R38 billion from R31 billion.

“Clearly, Eskom finances are in a shambles. The true state of Eskom’s financial situation is markedly different from the picture of excellence painted by Mr Ben Ngubane when he and the board appeared before the portfolio committee on public enterprises less than two months ago,” said DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, Natasha Mazzone.

“It is utterly unacceptable for executive bonuses to be paid while ordinary employees may not be paid. Only good performance should be rewarded, yet Eskom is clearly intent on doing the opposite…The DA publicly calls on Minister Brown to reject the request to approve short term bonuses,” she said.
