Charge of treason laid against mineral resources minister by Outa

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse has filed charges of treason, corruption, extortion, fraud and theft against the minister for mineral resources, Mosebenzi Zwane.

The charges were layed this morning at Randburg Police station in Johannesburg by chief operating officer at Outa Benjamin Theron in a lengthy affidavit.

“Zwane, as a citizen of the Republic of South Africa and Minister of Mineral Resources, unquestionably owed his allegiance to the Republic. He intentionally and unlawfully participated in activities which violated, threatened and endangered the existence, independence and security of the Republic,” Theron wrote in his filing.

Outa has claimed that Zwane facilitated the sale of Optimum Coal Holdings assets to the Gupta family. The organisation has also said that Zwane tried to defend the Guptas’ banking access.

The organisation has also accused the minister of promoting the Vrede diary project in the Free State which apparently benefited the Gupta family and cost the province R183.95 million.

“He is a puppet on state capture strings,” Theron said in a statement.

This is the third action Outa has taken against the Gupta family and those connected to them. The first was against Bank of Baroda and Bank of India which reportedly gave the Gupta family massive bonds on their properties. Outa says these bonds raise suspicions of money laundering.

The second action came earlier this month when Outa filed charges of treason against former minister of communications and current minister of public service Faith Muthambi.

Treason charges can carry a sentence of up to life in prison.
