Early reviews for Netflix’s The Defenders are coming in

If you’re broke, anti-social or you want an excuse to curl up on your couch under a blanket and not leave the house, Netflix has you covered this coming month.

Marvel’s new series The Defenders drops on 18th August and, since it’s not appearing on terrestrial television in SA, South African Netflix subscribers will be able to watch it at the same time as everyone else. That’s the full series, all the episodes, available to watch on the same day. Book some time off work.

“Aha!” we hear you say. “Is it any good? Remember the last Marvel series Iron Fist, was pants, so I’m not booking time off unless The Defenders is awesome!”

Well, the reviews have started rolling in and while it’s not prompting the frothing at the mouth that say, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens did, critics have been very positive.

At the top end, Gizmodo’s review calls it great, saying that the four heroes it features – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist – are not only “better together than they are apart, they’re more entertaining (too)”.

The review on We Got This Covered says while it’s not the strongest Marvel show on Netflix, “The Defenders splits the differences between its leads, creating something that even casual fans of these shows shouldn’t miss”.

UK movie mag Empire says “there is enough joy in watching the sparks fly as these four alpha characters finally collide to make you feel The Defenders might just have been worth the wait.”

Now admittedly, a couple of reviews have noted that the series’ pacing could do with some work, but overall, there’s reasons to be optimistic that The Defenders could be the Netflix binge-watch of the winter. If you need further tempting check out the trailer below:
