How to find an area with fibre internet coverage

If you’re looking for a new home and fibre internet is on your list of “must have” amenities we have good news.

The folks over at OTEL Telecoms have mapped out the location of the areas around South Africa that have fibre connectivity.

The map features connections from Openserve, Vodacom, Teralink Networks, Sizwe Connect and OTEL itself. Take note that Vumatel is omitted from OTEL’s map but thankfully it has its own.

A snapshot of Vumatel’s coverage in Gauteng.

For those that aren’t aware of the benefits of fibre, OTEL chief executive officer Rad Jankovic explains, “Fibre cuts the monthly costs of both home and business consumers because it provides voice and data services at a fraction of the cost of copper-based, fixed-line infrastructure.

Something that becomes painfully apparent no matter which map you look at is that fibre connectivity is not nearly as ubiquitous as many would like it to be.

In fact OTEL says that of the approximately 14.5 million households in South Africa only 100 000 homes have access to fibre internet. That’s 0.69% of the households in the entire country. Granted that 14.5 million figure was gathered during the census six years ago so take it with a grain of salt.

Both maps also reveal that outside of the major metropolitan areas (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein) fibre connectivity appears to be rather scattered.

Hopefully this changes over time but for now if you’re looking at moving and fibre internet is on your list of amenities at least there is an easy way to find out which areas suit your needs.
