Matt Groening is making a Netflix series

Matt Groening, he who created both The Simpsons and Futurama, says his new animated comedy series will hit screens on Netflix next year.

Can we get a ‘hell yes!’?

The new series is called Disenchanted and has been described as an adult fantasy comedy set in dilapidated medieval kingdom called Dreamland.

One of the show’s main characters is a booze-addled princess named Princess Bean, who is voiced by comedian Abbi Jackson, who Comedy Central fans may remember from the superb web series, Broad City. UK comedian and Mighty Boosh member Noel Fielding is also in the cast.

“Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you,” said Groening. So it doesn’t sound that far off from the man’s previous works, then.

The Netflix series is slated for release in 2018 and will run for 20 episodes. Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, says that the streaming media service is naturally thrilled that Groening is making a series for it.

“Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment,” Holland said.

“The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”

Now of course, the only worry that South African Netflix subscribers have is the possibility DStv may plonk a bunch of money down in front of Netflix for the rights to air Disenchanted here first. In that event, we’d have to wait for it to land on Netflix, but if recent releases on the streaming media service are anything to go by, the likelihood of this happening is minimal. And that’s a damn good thing!

If you need a hit of Groening’s work right now, the maker community has you covered with an Arduino-powered Bender that gives you Futurama quotes for money, and a 3D print of the famous delivery spaceship from the same show.
