SA population estimated at 57 million

By st July this year, South Africa’s population was estimated at 56.5 million, according to Statistics South Africa’s (StatsSA) mid-year estimates.

This is an increase of 600 000 from 2016’s 55.9 million estimate.

The Mid-year estimates are an annual estimate of the population as at 1st July in a given year.

The black African population is in the majority (45.7 million) and constitutes approximately 81% of the total South African population. The white population is estimated at 4.5 million, the coloured population at 5.0 million and the Indian/Asian population at 1.4 million.

Women make up 51% of the population at 28.9 million.

Gauteng comprises the largest share of the South African population. Approximately 14.3 million people (25,3%) live in this province. KwaZulu-Natal is the province with the second largest population, with 11.1 million people (19.6%) living in this province. With a population of approximately 1.21 million people (2.1%), Northern Cape remains the province with the smallest share of the South African population.

Young people under the age of 15 make up 30% of population, while senior citizens aged 60 and above make up 8.1%.

“The mid-year population estimates produced by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) uses the cohort-component method for population estimation. In the cohort-component method, a base population is estimated that is consistent with known demographic characteristics of the country. The cohort base population is projected into the future according to the projected components of change. Selected levels of fertility, mortality and migration are used as input to the cohort-component method,” StatsSA said.
