Google disabled Instant Search and you didn’t even notice

Back in 2010 Google announced Instant Search and this week it is kicking it to the curb.

The feature suggested terms that users might be searching for and put them in a box below the search bar as well as “autocomplete” what you may be searching for.

The feature would also auto load the results page when you searched from the Google home page.

The aim of Instant Search was to assist slow typists but the internet landscape has changed significantly between 2010 and now.

“Since then, many more of our searches happen on mobile, with very different input and interaction and screen constraints. With this in mind, we have decided to remove Google Instant, so we can focus on ways to make Search even faster and more fluid on all devices,” a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land.

If you head to Google now search suggestions will compile in the box below the search in greyed-out text.

Honestly it’s a feature many will never even notice is missing but if something feels different the next time you search on a desktop, that’s why.
