Want to embed your images stored on Photobucket in a blog? That will be R5 200

Photobucket has shuffled in a change to its terms of service that has users understandably upset.

The change is in how users embed images from the site. Where once any user could embed any amount of content to a third part website, Photobucket has decided that is a privilege that one ought to pay for.

In an update published last week, Photobucket included this change to how free accounts work.

“The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If a free account Member exceeds their Content Limit, their account will be immediately suspended and they will need to become a “Paying Member” (defined below) in order to continue accessing their account.”

In order to get back the ability to post embed images from Photobucket into your account you’ll need to purchase a Plus 500 Plan from Photobucket which costs $399.99 (R5 265.66) per year. Oh, apologies, you also get access to Photobucket’s tech support team and you ads will be removed as well.

So to sum up, for the price of a camera you get 500GB of cloud storage and the ability to link and embed your images.

Needless to say, users are upset.

One could argue that users should have read the terms of service before jumping into their accounts but the terms of service update was only published last week and Photobucket said at the time “We have updated our Terms of Service, effective June 20” so it’s unlikely users could have taken action if they wanted to.
