LEGO to release an official Voltron set in 2018

Thanks to LEGO Ideas – a system in which fan-made creations can be turned into official sets – a brick-built Voltron will be on shelves some time in 2018.

This was announced yesterday in in the results of a review where Voltron beat out ten other creations that were also eligible.

As this is early days for the set there are no prices or piece counts to go off of, and the pictures of the build in the gallery below may not be accurate to the final product.

That being said, the finished Ideas sets that we’ve seen in the past such as Wall-E,  Ghostbusters Ecto-1 and The Beatles Yellow Submarine have all been fairly faithful to the original submissions.

What you can expect is a huge set that’s going to be very, very expensive. In return you’ll be getting five lions which you can built separately and then combine a la Transformers’ combiners.

The test build, held by creator Leandro Tayag, stands at 16 inches (40,64 centimetres) and weighs close to one kilogram. Like we said: big and expensive.

Make sure you also read Tayag’s interview to learn how a software architect became a LEGO designer.

If Voltron is not for you, a second set was also approved by Ideas yesterday. The classic ship in a bottle will also be available in 2018. We imagine it’s going to be easier to build when compared to the real thing.
