South Africans have a new music streaming app, but do we need it?

Naspers and Tencent today announced a new music streaming app called JOOX available for iOS and Android devices.

Aside from the usual temptations such as offline listening for paying members (or VIP members as they’re known) JOOX also boasts 3 million songs.

The trouble is that JOOX is now entering a space that Google Music, Apple Music, and Deezer have been playing in for a long time. So having both a premium subscription to Deezer and iTunes I thought I’d see if I really need yet another streaming service.

A VIP membership to JOOX will cost you R59.99 per month which is the same as the base membership for Google Music, Apple Music and Deezer. JOOX does offer you five months of VIP membership for free when you sign up which is a nice bonus.

Signing up is also easy with options for users to link their Facebook or WeChat account to JOOX. Users can also use an email address to create an account.

Music selection

Where I believe the other services have JOOX pipped is in its music selection. This is a common problem with new streaming services because the inevitable licensing issues come into play.

That having been said, I wanted to listen to an album by deathcore band Whitechapel and it was absent on JOOX. Not just the album mind you, the band.

Of course the absence of an obscure deathcore band that appeals to few does not make the entire app worthless.

A quick browsing through the app’s Discover section reveals what appears to be a plethora of house, EDM and hip-hop most of which feature local artists.

So, should you sign up for JOOX?

That is entirely dependent on your music tastes so I would recommend downloading the app and using the first month (which is free) of your membership getting acquainted with the selection.

With that having been said, after a quick browse I didn’t find anything I couldn’t find on Deezer or Apple Music but once again your music tastes may vary.
