Parliament to start shortlisting 363 candidates for SABC board

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications will tomorrow kick off the process of narrowing down the list of 363 nominations for individuals for the new, permanent SABC board.

The interim SABC board, appointed earlier this year by President Jacob Zuma, finishes its six month term in September, making way for a new board to steer the public broadcaster out of choppy water.

Nominations for the new board closed on 30th June. The appointment process is in line with directives from the SABC Inquiry final report, which recommended that the previous board be dissolved and new board be formed.

DA spokesperson, Phumzile van Damme, said the party will push for the process be conducted with openness, transparency, and most importantly, with public participation.

According to the Broadcasting Act of 1999, twelve non-executive members must be appointed through this process. The CEO, COO and CFO are appointed via public posts and interviews. Two of the twelve must be appointed board chair and chairperson.

The new board will be appointed by President Jacob Zuma on advice from the National Assembly and will serve for a period of no longer than five years.
