Uber launches transport service for special needs commuters in Joburg

Uber has brought it special needs passenger service to Joburg.

uberASSIST, which was first piloted in Cape Town, provides elderly, injured and special needs passenger to catch an Uber in a vehicle suited to their physical needs.

Drivers are specifically trained to assist riders when getting in and out of vehicles and can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers and service animals.

“As this service is specifically aimed at those with access needs, we urge you to respect others by only using uberASSIST if applicable to you. We’d like to ensure those who need to get an uberASSIST ride can always do so,” Uber said.

Requesting an uberASSIST works the same way as a normal ride request. You’ll find the option at the bottom next to all the other ride options. Remember to update your app before doing so.

After requesting your ride, you can contact your uberASSIST driver ahead of time with any specific requests.

Uber’s feedback loop asks riders to rate every trip, and the company uses that information to improve the new service.
