HBO social media accounts hacked

The hits just keep on coming for HBO – and no, we’re not talking about hit television shows, we’re talking about hacking breaches.

Last night the network fell victim to yet another hacking attack when its Facebook and Twitter accounts were compromised.

The group responsible, who calls itself Ourmine, posted messages on both of HBO’s social media accounts, but they were quickly taken down. The message on Twitter read:

“Hi, OurَMiَne are here, we are just testing your security ,HBO team please contact us to upgrade the security – ourmine .org -> Contact.”

According to Gizmodo, this isn’t the first time Ourmine has gone after a high profile target. The group has hacked everyone from Netflix, to BuzzFeed, to Mark Zuckerberg to Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. Apparently the group pitches itself has a white hat hacking collective who hacks targets to show them that they’re vulnerable, but without really causing any damage.

So for HBO, there’s a silver lining in this rather dark cloud, and it could use some good news, because Lord knows it’s been a rough couple of weeks for the network.

At the beginning of the month, HBO confirmed that its servers had been breached and hackers had made off with 1.5TB of data, which included entire shows and scripts. The people responsible then issued a ransom demand for an undisclosed amount of money, threatening to leak episodes of HBO’s shows that hadn’t been broadcast yet if their demands weren’t met. They made good on that threat this week.

As if things couldn’t get any worse for HBO, yesterday the network learned that HBO Spain had mistakenly aired episode six of the latest series of Game Of Thrones, which naturally made its way onto torrent sites shortly after its broadcast.

HBO, it seems, is in dire need of a break.
