The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 looks explosive in all the right ways

South Korean electronics giant Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note 8 at an event held in New York, New York and streamed to the world.

Rather than ignore the Note 7 catastrophe of last year Samsung’s President of mobile communications DJ Koh acknowledge the event and thanked the fans of the firms Note series. “Your passion is of the greatest value to us,” he said.

But enough about the users, what about the Note 8?

As we suspected the handset looks a lot like the Galaxy S8 that was launched earlier this year though the Note 8 does have a larger display. Clocking at 6.3 inches with a QHD+ (1440×2960) resolution the Note 8 is definitely larger than its S-series cousin and also boasts a 2:1 aspect ratio.

Despite the larger display Koh says that it will still feel comfortable in your hand. The now iconic curved edge – sorry Infinity Display – is also back and this time users will also be able to use the S-Pen along with it.

The handset contains Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 an Exynos octa-core processor along with 6GB RAM so you can expect the Note 8 to be a lot faster than the S8. The handset will have 64GB of storage but this can be expanded with a microSD card.

Perhaps the coolest addition to the Note 8 is at the back of the handset where there is not one but two 12MP camera sensors. The main sensor will have 2x optical zoom, dual pixel sensor and an f/1.7 aperture. The second sensor contains a telephoto lens and an f/2.4 aperture with 10x digital zoom.

This dual camera setup will allow you to not only capture images with a Bokeh effect but users can tweak the intensity of the blur before you take the photo.

Of course the big question is the failing point of the Note 7 – the battery. Samsung has opted for a smaller 3300mAh battery and has subjected the handset to an 8 point battery safety check, just like it did with the S8 and S8+.

While there will be support for Bixby and Dex but Samsung revealed a few new apps. The firm announced App Pair which will allow you to launch two apps with one tap for example opening maps and your music player before starting your journey. Another cool feature is the ability to create a note when the display is off using the S-Pen.

The handset is expected to launch on 15th September in the USA. Locally the handset will be available in Maple Gold, Midnight Black and Orchid Grey.

Pre-orders for South African open on Samsung’s website this evening locally and if you pre-order you’ll get 6 months of Samsung Mobile Care Service for free.

The handset will launch in South Africa on 22nd September, but pre-order will start to be fulfilled from 15th September. As for price Samsung has said that the handset will retail for around R18 499 at launch. Best start saving.

Correction 23/08

Locally South Africa will be getting the Note 8 with an Exynos processor rather than the Snapdragon 835.
