ASUS ROG GR8 II Gaming Rig – Perfectly presented pixel power

Just a few years ago, it was unthinkable to expect big-name PC companies to understand exactly what gamers want from their PCs, and deliver those expectations in product form.

But times have changed, and today, we have companies like ASUS putting out dedicated gaming PCs that not only meet gamers’ expectations, but surpass them.

Great Gaming

Take the console-sized Republic of Gamers GR8 II as an example: it’s a tiny desktop PC that over-delivers the hardware needed to keep gamers gaming at high detail and fast frame rates, but which still manages to look good doing it while also catering for things like the Virtual Reality headsets that are the future of gaming.

Just how small is it? Well, it has just four litres of space inside its compact spacecraft-like chassis, but don’t let that put you off – its internal hardware still manages to pack a real wallop.

1440p and 4K

Thanks to support for desktop-class quad-core 7th-gen Core i7 processors from Intel, and NVIDIA’s excellent GTX1060 graphics card (3GB and 6GB versions available), it’s able to run games at 1440p and 4K at frame rates gamers not only find acceptable, but desirable.

That power can be applied to playing games like Forza Horizon 3 in 4K at 43fps and at a rock-solid 60fps in 1440p (2560 x 1440), or roaming through lag-free virtual worlds with a VR headset strapped to your noggin.

VR support

Right now, the GR8 II supports the Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE, with future support for other leading VR headsets in the pipeline, and it has two HDMI ports so you can connect a screen and a VR headset up at the same time. There’s even a DisplayPort connector that lets gamers hook up a third monitor, if VR isn’t their thing but surround-gaming is.

Heat Management

Despite its rather tight 4 litre internal volume, ASUS has managed to engineer in separate chambers for the CPU and GPU in order to regulate the heat the system generates. This keeps thermal throttling from taking place, which drops gaming performance to maintain a target temperature range. It’s a problem gaming laptops experience, that this system is entirely immune to.

And because gamers want a fast system and plenty of space to store their games, the GR8 II ships with an M.2 solid-state primary drive for speed and a traditional 2.5-inch hard drive for capacity. Pair this with a built-in AC-class WiFi radio and a gigabit Ethernet port, and you have a stacked gaming PC that’s ready to tackle any LAN.

GR8 for LANs

Thanks to its diminutive size but potent performance without any heat concerns, the GR8 II offers a brilliant compromise between a full-sized desktop PC and a gaming laptop. It’s great for LAN gamers who don’t like lugging their desktop systems around because of their size and weight, and once there, they won’t overheat and throttle gaming performance like gaming laptops can sometimes do.

The ASUS ROG GR8 II, then, is a small but powerful gaming package that has gamers’ interests at heart.
