Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper passes away

Tobe Hooper, the director best known for the films The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist has died at the age of 74.

The news was reported by Variety Magazine, said that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said Hooper died of natural causes. At the time of this writing, no official statement from Hooper’s family has been released.

Hooper helmed numerous horror films during his career, but the one that first gained him international fame (and infamy) was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s the story of a group of teenagers who run afoul of a deranged family of nutters in America’s deep south. It was – and remains – a surreal and terrifying portrayal of the American family as a nightmare. It’s also the film that gave the world Leatherface, a character that was based on serial killer Ed Gein.

Hooper’s other notable works include Poltergeist, the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, Lifeforce and more recently the rather grisly Toolbox Murders. Horror fans will likely be familiar with a lot of Hooper’s films. For those who have never watched one, we strongly suggest you start with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and move on to Poltergeist. Both are pretty much horror canon. Oh, and do yourself a favour and watch the original movies, rather than the remakes.

Hooper’s death comes just over a month or so since George A. Romero, the visionary director behind Night Of The Living Dead and Day Of The Dead passed away at the age of 77.
