Fitbit’s first smartwatch is loaded with features

After acquiring Pebble late in 2016 Fitbit is finally putting the acquisition to some use with the announcement of the Fitbit Ionic.

The Ionic will be the first true-blue smartwatch from the firm which has enjoyed great success in the realm of fitness trackers. Unlike previous wearables from the firm the Ionic will support third party apps.

In addition to that the wearable will feature an SpO2 tracker. This will estimate the amount of oxygen in your blood. Fitbit says that in the future this sensor can be used to track things like sleep apnea.

Aside from that the Ionic will have all the goodies you’ve come to from a fitness tracker including heart rate tracking, GPS tracking and it’s water resistant up to 50 meters.

Because the Ionic is a watch and not just a wearable with fitness tracking functionality it will also support contactless payments and apps from the likes of Strava and AccuWeather.

The firm will release a software development kit (SDK) for developers in September. Developers will be able to make use of all the sensors to build customised apps and there is the option to create an app or clock face just for your friends and family.

The Fitbit Ionic is currently available for pre-order but will be made available globally in October with a starting price of $299.95 (~R4 000).
