The wait is over, South African owners of Samsungs Galaxy S8 and S8+ can now talk to Bixby.

The functionality has been rolled out to 200 countries today including the UK, Canada and South Africa and is available in English (US) and Korean.

Bixby has a few great features but perhaps the most interesting is that it is contextually aware. For instance if you snap a picture you can “text that photo to John” and the assistant will know which photo you are referring to, attach it to a message and send it along.

“The expansion of Bixby’s voice capabilities is an initial step in the continued rollout of its functionality,” chief marketing office at Samsung South Africa Justin Hume said in a statement.

“In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices,” he added.

Users also have the option to set verbal macros. For example, saying “good night” could prompt the phone to enable do-not-disturb mode, set an alarm and turn on the Galaxy S8’s blue light filter.

Samsung says it will continue to expand Bixby’s capabilities.

You can activate Bixby by holding the dedicated button on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ phones, or by simply saying, “Hi, Bixby”.
