Huawei’s Kirin 970 chipset promises to make mobile AI a reality

Rather than introduce a new smartphone at IFA 2017 like LG, Lenovo and Sony, Huawei chose to unveil a new chipset.

To be honest we’re not even a little bit sad that Huawei went this route because (and I can’t believe I’m typing this) this chipset sounds incredible.

The chipset in question is the new Kirin 970 which Huawei develops in-house.

The chipset contains an octa-core CPU and a 12-core GPU. What’s more is that the 970 uses a 10nm process so it will be powerful but not power hungry.

While more power without consuming more battery power is always great the most exciting claim Huawei made was that the chipset would be its first mobile artificial intelligence (AI) computing platform.

“Huawei is committed to developing smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to- end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud,” said Huawei Consumer Business Group chief executive officer Richard Yu.

“The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better user experience. The Kirin 970 is the first in a series of new advances that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and take them beyond the competition,” he added.

What Huawei is betting on is a combination of on-device AI and Cloud AI. While Cloud based AI has been in development for years it suffers from latency and stability issues. By combining Cloud AI capabilities with on-device AI (which is in turn coupled with a plethora of sensors) we might see a more efficient mobile AI solution but we really need to see what this combination of tech is capable of before we laud it as the greatest thing since the iPhone.

The firm says that the chipset was able to process 2 000 images per minute in an image recognition test which Huawei says was faster than other chips on the market though didn’t share which chips or how much faster it was.

Huawei didn’t share when we would start seeing handsets with the Kirin 970 inside but we hope that it will make its way into the Huawei Mate 10.
